Just as it’s important to choose a personal physician that you’re comfortable with, it’s important to choose a veterinarian that meets you needs. It’s important to choose a veterinarian that is knowledgeable. Some vets see only cats and dogs, other may also see birds, pocket pets or reptiles, but not everyone may see exotic animals regularly enough to maintain true expertise. If you have a bird, pocket pet or reptile, or some other more unusual pet try to find a doctor who specializes in these animals.

All veterinarians have a different approach to their practice. Some may be more aggressive with diagnosis and treatments, and others more conservative. Finding one that you are comfortable with will be a personal issue.
One way to evaluate a potential veterinarian is at a routine appointment such as for annual vaccinations. Make sure to request an annual exam because you may not see the doctor if you only request the immunizations. You can See how they treat your pet, if they answer your questions, offer appropriate services based on your pets need, if they explain any other costs or fees clearly, or if you feel judged or pressured about anything. Once you find a practice you like, stick with them.

A good way to begin your search is to ask for referrals from friends or family. Having a veterinarian that you trust and like can make all the difference in your peace of mind when you furry buddy has an emergency.
